Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do at LIVEfree Project, infusing our work with compassion, dedication, and a profound sense of community. They generously contribute their time, skills, and hearts to serve those in need, often going above and beyond to create a meaningful impact. Their unwavering commitment not only enriches the lives of those they assist but also strengthens our community as a whole. Volunteers embody the spirit of generosity and selflessness, generating a ripple effect of positive change that extends well beyond their immediate contributions. Through their steadfast support, we are able to achieve our mission, foster meaningful connections, and inspire hope and resilience in the lives we touch.
Annie joined the volunteer team at LIVEfree Project with a heart full of compassion and a drive to make a difference.
Her involvement has been with the Brighter Beginnings Bus Run, where she has made an extraordinary impact. Annie has been instrumental in our Waratah West bus run, providing consistent support and care to the children and helping them start their day on a positive note.
Her dedication has been evident in every aspect of the role; her ability to connect with the children and her commitment to their wellbeing have significantly enhanced the program’s effectiveness.
Her presence has left a lasting impact on both the children and the team, embodying the spirit of service that defines LIVEfree Project. We took the time to ask Annie about her volunteering experience and what it means to her, gaining insights into the personal significance and impact of her role.
My Journey with the Brighter Beginnings Bus Program
Volunteering has always held a special place in my heart. When I found myself with some spare time, I knew it was an opportunity to give back to the community that has given me so much. Life has its ups and downs, and during challenging moments, I've been grateful for the kindness and support of others. Now, it’s my turn to make a difference, especially for children who face difficulties beyond their control. By starting with kids, I believe we can help steer their lives onto a positive path.
What keeps me motivated in my volunteer role is the sheer joy and connection I experience each week. The fun we have together and the relationships we build are incredibly rewarding. Every week, I go home with a collection of delightful stories. The kids and I have our little traditions—like playing the alphabet game and chatting about their latest interests, such as the Woolworths cards. Their creativity in adapting game rules and their infectious laughter bring so much light to my day.
One story that stands out is about little Nathaniel. When I first started volunteering, he was just five years old and quite hesitant to interact with me. I remember the first time I tried to take his hand to walk him to his car seat—he was not having any of it! My driver, Henry, reassured me that Nathaniel had only ever taken Chloe’s hand before. Fast forward to today, and he is a completely different child. He eagerly runs to greet me, shares stories about his week, and even waits at the door for me to arrive. It’s been incredible to witness Nathaniel’s transformation and the trust we've built over time.
The Brighter Beginnings Bus Program has had a profound impact on the community. I’ve seen its evolution from the early days when Chris managed everything solo, driving around in her car, to the expanded bus service we have now. The program’s growth, fuelled by donations and community support, has significantly improved the children's lives. Many of these kids, who once struggled with attendance and grades, are now seeing positive changes. They’re not only getting to school but also forming friendships and finding a sense of belonging.
There have been many memorable moments, like the time Kyan forgot his bag and we had to problem-solve to get him back into his apartment. Despite the hiccups, it was a hilarious and heartwarming experience. The program offers a fantastic start to the day for these children, and from a volunteer’s perspective, it's a fulfilling way to spend a few hours before having the rest of the day to oneself.
As I prepare to move, I find myself feeling bittersweet. I’m committed to finishing my volunteering role with the same passion and dedication until the very end. My husband Steve and I will be relocating soon, but I’m already planning to stay connected. If I find myself back in town, I’ll definitely surprise everyone and reconnect with the program.
Thank you to everyone who has supported and been a part of this journey. Your encouragement and involvement have made all the difference. Here’s to continuing to make a positive impact in the lives of those who need it most.
